Lapacho – the inner bark of long-lived tress of the Tabebuia impetiginosa species, growing in tropical forests of the Southern and Central America. Lapacho is also known as Pau d’arco, Ipe Roxo, Taheebo or “Inca tea”.

Studies of therapeutic properties of Lapacho demonstrated that it is rich in selected elements, including iron, calcium, manganese and magnesium. It contains at least 20 active ingredients, of which the most important one is lapachol, demonstrating a strong anti-viral effect. For centuries Pau d’arco has been used in traditional medicine, mostly by native inhabitants of Latin America, in therapy of infections and diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Decoction of Lapacho bark helps eradicating parasites, supports digestion, improves function of the immunological system. It also has antibiotic and detoxifying properties – releases toxins from internal organs and eliminates them. Scientists declare that Lapacho focuses on the cause of disease and improves immunity of the organism, forcing it to combat the disease efficiently. Therefore the substance is believed to act more rapidly and efficiently, compared to other similar products.

Contraindications: the use during pregnancy and lactation, and during the use of antithrombotic drugs is contraindicated. Because of insufficient evidence, the use in young children is contraindicated.

Side effects: there may be nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, resulting from the detoxification process. Those effects usually disappear within several days. However, if they persist, the treatment should be discontinued.

Preparation:
1 tablespoon of the bark for a glass of water. Boil for 10-15 minutes and then wait for additional 10 minutes to brew. Filter and drink the decoction only. Dosage: 2 to 5 glasses a day. A month-long therapy is recommended for best results.

Taste of the Lapacho bark decoction may be described as nutty, woody and nicely herbal.

Leaves a slightly hot, astringent aftertaste.
